6 Fantastic Beauty Uses For Baking Soda

Baking soda is a staple item that has been in my family for years.  Most of these Pantry to Pretty Bits, as I like to call them, I got from my mom and grandmother and have implemented them into my everyday beauty regimen. Today, I would like to share with you 6 fantastic beauty uses for Baking Soda!

The obvious one if to freshen your breath.  You see baking soda added to toothpastes, mouthwashes, etc. out in the market.  But, I'll make my version by mixing it with mouthwash or toothpaste.  Simply add about a teaspoon of it to half glass of water and add a splash of mouthwash or toothpaste to help with the taste.

Clarifying Shampoo:  Baking soda is great for removing excess residue from your hair from styling products.  I use this in place of a clarifying shampoo or Sunday Shampoo, where you only use it once a week or in some cases once a month.

How to: Add it to your shampoo and make sure to rinse well and condition as normal.

Dry Shampoo:  Trying to get a few extra days out of your hair without washing, this works wonders.  You want to sprinkle the baking soda near your scalp, where it is oiliest, and brush it through your hair, till the white dissipates.   If you have dark hair like myself, you’ll want to add some loose bronzer to it. Otherwise, it will dull your hair and give you a grayish hue.

Bath: No more need for Calgon to take you away, as you can add baking soda to your bath to soften and soothe your skin and worries of the day.

A Facial Scrub:  This is great for exfoliation and because there are not any harsh chemicals like some you may find from store bought brands, it is safe to use a few times a week.  Merely, combine some baking soda with some water, you want it to be a paste and you have your exfoliant.

Deodorant:  If you are in a pinch or worried about commercially-made deodorants, you can use baking soda as a deodorant.   How to? My grandmother would use a paintbrush and apply it to her underarms. But in this day and age, you can use a sponge or a blush brush to apply.

A DIY Oatmeal Facial Scrub

It’s been a while since I’ve played with some items in my kitchen for a new DIY scrub.  A friend of mine has a spa, and one of the featured treatments was an oatmeal scrub.  It sounded amazing but wasn’t amazing was the cost.  So I decided, what a great idea for a Pantry to Pretty Bit.  The recipe is very similar to hers, but 90% of the cost.

What You’ll Need:

• ¼ cup of ground whole oats.  I initially attempted to use an old coffee grinder to grind this, but ended up purchasing it at a store for a finer blend.
• 1 cup of brown sugar
• ¼ cup of grape seed oil
• One tablespoon of lemon
• You can add milk or water to the mix.  I added milk.
• You want to mix it all in a bowl, to a thick consistency.
• Apply to face in a circle motion
• Leave on for 30 minutes
• Rinse and wash, moisturize as usual 

Storage: The mixture will last a while if stored properly.  If you have a mason jar or something air tight, I'd use that for storage.

The Benefits: Exfoliation of the skin helps with skin rejuvenation. Hence using a gentle mixture like this oatmeal DIY scrub, you'll be able to use it frequently leaving your skin soft and glowing.

It's Time For Another FRIDAY FAVORITE... 

With a foundation applicator LOVE! 

This Weeks Favorite: The Beauty Blender, this is my secret weapon; it is a makeup tool must have!  This little pink beauty leaves you with a professional look and a flawless complexion. I PINKY swear by it!

About:  Now your face can have a smooth, flawless finish each time you use this beauty!  I’m sure at one point in time you’ve experienced a bad foundation applicator, whatever the reason.  But not any longer as this sponge is fool proof. I think it has a lot to do with its shape; the curves allow you to get easily in all those difficult areas.  Furthermore, the sponge eliminates all streaks, and when it’s wet, it expands to double its size for full face coverage.  Plus, it is latex free and non-allergenic. Can we say YEAH? This is probably why, this is the most used item by professional makeup artists, and now you know our secret!

How Do I Use This? 

• I prefer to use it damp as it doesn’t absorb a lot of unneeded foundation, considering the costs of some foundations, why waste it on the applicator!  It’s important that if you want to use this wet that you squeeze out the extra water before using. 
• Next, you want to pick up a small amount of your favorite foundation and apply to your face (make sure you have applied primer to your face first)!  
• Apply your foundation using the stippling approach, which is basically tapping the sponge to your face, allowing for spectacular blending, with no streaking! 
• The pointy end of the sponge permits you to get near your eyes, nose, and other small areas. This end also works wonders when it comes to covering blemishes. (I'm telling you this is one makeup applicator you must have in your makeup arsenal).

Cleaning:  As with all makeup brushes and applicators, cleaning them correctly and more importantly, often is essential.  I mean, why would you want to continually apply oil and dirt to your face?  You will if you don't clean your sponge regularly, so please clean correctly.

The Beauty Blender brand has a few options for cleansers. There is a liquid product as well as a travel-friendly alternative to the liquid, which is called Solid. The Solid comes with a custom grid to dry the Beauty Blender; I also use it to deep clean my other makeup brushes!   

BONUS: One really neat thing about this bad boy is you can put it in the dryer! However, make sure to use an air-dry setting.  NO HEAT!
